What Is Forensic Entomology?

Forensic entomology is the study of insects on the person and surroundings of a dead body or cadaver. The career though not for the faint hearted is one of the most important aspects of criminal investigation. The type of insects that are attracted to the body after death can help to identify the time of death as well as provide a wealth of information from the medico criminal point of view such as
  • 1.       The location of death
  • 2.       The link between the suspect and the victim
  • 3.       Provide toxicology samples and other evidence.

What Does A Forensic Entomologist Do?

A person who has opted to study abroad in the field of forensic entomology is mainly responsible for determining the Post-mortem interval or the minimum amount of time that has elapsed since the victim was dead. They do this by examining the age, species and colony composition of the arthropods (spiders) and insects found on and around the body. They may either examine the body at the scene of crime itself or conduct a post-mortem examination of the victim’s body. Alternatively, they may be given specimens or photographs for further investigation.

Career Prospects for a Forensic Entomologist

Forensic entomologists can either be full-time employees of law enforcement agencies or can be called on to work on a case by case basis. Their job is to assist the coroners and medical examiners as well as the investigators to answer questions related to investigation of death that has occurred under suspected and mysterious circumstances. Their work normally involves
  • 1.       Being one of the first responders to the scene of crime to recover and identify the remains in order to preserve evidence
  • 2.       Studying the types of insects that are around the body as well as their developmental stage, growth and damage they have caused to the body to calculate the time of death.
  • 3.       Studying the weather pattern before and after the criminal act to determine the life stage of the insect
  • 4.       Collecting, storing and analyzing entomological specimens

A forensic entomologist can expect to earn around 60,000 USD on an average
