1. German efficiency vs. Indian easy going attitude
In India we have an easy going
attitude towards everything. Very often we drift through life without too many
rules and get along just fine. And even if we do have rules we seldom know
about them, and if we do we don’t pay attention to them. As an immigrant, you
will find that Germany is quite different. As a new immigrant to Germany you will need to know all the rules that are
applicable in your society and heed them. For example did you know in some
parts of Germany it is illegal to run your washing machines after 8 Pm or run a
blender in the afternoon between 1 and 3 pm? Also recycling on Sunday will get
you a reprimand from your law enforcement officer.
2. Germans are friendly but no small talk please
As Indians we are used to
starting a conversation with everyone from the pan wala to the bhaji wala to
the cabbie on the way to office and talk on every topic from the health of your
mother’s uncle to the state of economy after the imposition of GST!
In Germany you will get a few
polite stares if you did that as a new immigrant. Germans are polite, crisp and
to the point. If you need any help with directions or want to buy something,
they will politely help you with that, but do not prefer to indulge in small
talk.
3. The silence here is deafening
Have you ever had a teacher ask
you to maintain ‘pin-drop’ silence whilst you were in school? Well you can call
her up and ask her to go to Germany as she is sure to find it there. From the
sounds of the milk man’s bicycle bell in the morning to the loud construction
noise across the street, for most Indians life is one cacophonous record. We
are apt to do everything loudly from talking on the phones to belting out our
favorite numbers on the car radio. As an immigrant you will find that Germans
are highly sensitive to loud noises of any kind and as a new immigrant it’s
always better to watch your sounds lest you be frowned on.
4. German’s are zealous about saving energy
As an Indian immigrant to Germany
you will find it astonishing to see the zeal with which Germans take their
energy saving rules. Everyone from the toddler upwards knows the importance of
conserving energy and you are sure to be met with censorious looks if you
commit the sin of leaving the car engine running at a stop light or forget to
power off an appliance. As an immigrant you will need to learn the importance
of conserving energy while in Germany
5. Germans take everything seriously – even garbage!
For most Indians taking out
garbage means simply dumping the contents of your garbage can into the larger
municipal can. A few in urban areas may segregate their trash into wet and dry
garbage or keep a bin for recycling, but that’s about it. As a new immigrant in
Germany you will find that garbage collection is quite a serious affair. Not
only are there specific days and timings for garbage collection, but the
garbage is expected to be sorted and color coded too. As a new immigrant you
will need to learn put the garbage in the right bins - Blue bins for paper
products, yellow for other packaging products, brown bins for food scraps and
black bins for residual waste. Plastic bottles don’t go into the garbage at all
but have to be taken back to the supermarket for recycling.
