Newly appointed Prime Minister of
the United Kingdom, revealed plans on Thursday to run the country’s immigration
system on a liberal program. He distanced himself from former PM Theresa May’s
proposed target to cut the annual net migration and in a move surprising many
showed interest in providing amnesty for all illegal immigrants in the country.
The new prime minister in a speech to the House of Commons, opined that the
United Kingdom needs to attract and retain highly
skilled individuals who bring in the best and brightest talent from all
parts of the world.
UK PM Inspired By Australia Immigration System
Just like President Donald Trump
of USA, who has often praised the Australian system of merit based immigration,
UK’s new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has also expressed his desire to
introduce a point’s based system for UK, which would be styled in a similar
fashion to the Australia
immigration system.
Mr Johnson further stated that he
would request his government’s Migration Advisory Committee to review the
immigration system that is currently existing in Australia in order to
understand it better. When Prime
Minister Johnson was asked for his opinion about the annual target of 100,000
net migration, proposed in 2010 by David Cameron in 2010 but has never been met,
his spokesperson informed that the PM was not interested in numbers but the
quality of talent.
The move to do away with the net
migration target was hailed as a positive sign and was welcomed by many business
leaders, chief UK policy director of CBI Matthew Fell, praised the move saying
that, scrapping the target for net migration will send a signal to the world
that UK is open to receiving the best talent from across the world.
