7 Reasons why you should consider immigration

Get Quick & Easier Immigration Visa Process

If you are a young adult having a steady income in India, either single or married with a family, then surely at some point or other in your life, you would have thought about Immigration to another country. A number of things may have triggered the feeling of getting away from it all. Either it was the stories brought back from perfect cities with perfect roads by your neighbor who is back on vacation to visit his family from Canada. Perhaps it is the story of hiking through the Yosemite Valley, narrated to you by your adventurous cousin who lives in the USA, or the ultra-cool things your aunt who lives in London buys at Harrods. Whatever it is, you are sure to have thought about Immigration at least once.
However, the current political situation all over the world is forcing many people to rethink their immigration plans. Almost all the countries are tightening borders and making immigration more difficult than before. So why in such circumstances should you immigrate? Let’s take a look

Reasons for immigration – The immigrant’s perspective

A while back we took a look at how  Immigration Advisors can help the host country, we now look at some of the reasons why immigration is a benefit to you even in the current situation
  1. Countries such as Canada, UK, USA and Australia have healthcare policies in place which are geared towards benefiting citizens and residents. If you are planning to go abroad for work, then it is wise to think about getting residency
  2. The quality of life enjoyed by people in countries such as Canada, Australia, USA and UK is far better than the one you can enjoy in India.
  3. The infrastructure is far better in these countries than in India, the roads are well built and without potholes and traveling for those who live in these countries is much easier between places than for those who stay back in India
  4. A person who lives in a first world country can also be on the right side of the exchange rate. You would be earning in a currency which would be of a higher value than the rupee. On account of the exchange rate, a person who lives abroad can have a comfortable lifestyle and still have a lot of money. Which is not possible if you stay back in India.
  5. Schools up to university level are free in most of the countries. People who live in these countries, get the benefit of free quality education for their children. Also, the quality of education is far higher than in India
  6. If you have children or are planning for them in the near future, then immigration to a first world country can be the best gift you give to them for their future. Universities in most of the first world countries have varying fee structures, wherein local residents have to pay a lower tuition as compared to international students. If you have already immigrated to a country like Canada, UK, USA or Australia which have the world’s best universities than your children will have to pay lower fees as they would qualify as residents.
  7. This would be the best time to initiate the immigration process especially as more and more countries are tightening their immigration policies. If you do decide to immigrate then its best to do so before the process becomes more difficult.

Is Canada the best Place for Immigrants?

Considering, Canada’s vast tracts on uninhabitable land, its harsh weather conditions and strict vetting Process for Immigrants, it is surprising to see the vast number of people who are keen on moving to Canada and giving up their passport for the one with a Maple leaf on it. Not just Indians, but also citizens from many other countries are keen on moving to Canada and joining its legion of Immigrants, as can be seen from the various studies and surveys conducted by independent publishing groups as well as quasi-governmental data. A number of these studies put Canada at the top or at least in the first five of the list of most popular destination for Immigrants.  So what makes Canada such a favorite destination for immigrants, let’s take a look

Canada is one of the least Polluted Nations

Whenever a person decides to become an immigrant in a new country he is looking for more than a change of place or an opportunity for career growth. What he is looking for is a complete change of lifestyle for him and his family. The clean roads, unpolluted air and green landscapes that surround him in most Canadian cities are a welcome change for the immigrant from the heat and dust back home. Canada is one of the least polluted countries in the world. A new Immigrant to Canada is confident in the knowledge that he is safeguarding his family from the hazardous effects of pollution. A comparison of pollution data between India and Canada is provided below[i]
Pollution Index: India – 76.52, Canada – 27.60
Air pollution: India – 69.96, Canada – 18.91
Water pollution: India – 69.17, Canada – 36.19

Transportation in Canada is one of the best

Canada has an efficient, high capacity and multimodal transport network which consists of air traffic, public bus networks, rail transit networks and ferries. Most of the aspects of transportation within Canada come under the purview of Transport Canada. Canadian city transport systems are amongst the best in the world and many of the city public transport networks will allow you to ride certain routes absolutely free or allow you to ride multiple routes on a single ticket. A new Immigrant to Canada will be surprised to see that the commute to office that took hours in slow moving traffic back in India, will take him half the time in a Canadian city. A study conducted by OECD[ii] put time taken traveling to work by Indian workers at around 50 minutes per day on an average, when compared to Canada who averaged at 40 minutes. These figures though statistically close do not take into account the levels of stress that is encountered by people driving through the haphazard and poorly built roads in India, when compared to the well-built expressways and streamlined traffic in Canada.

Good Governance is another factor, where Canada scores a hit

Immigrants from third world countries are sure to see the contrast between the governance back home and the governance in Canada. Whether it is a driving license, a utility connection or getting registered for a community service, the process is much faster and more streamlined in Canada than it is in India. Corruption also is far more rampart in India than it is in Canada. A comparison of corruption indices between the two countries, puts Canada’s corruption index at 40, which is a low figure when compared to India’s corruption index of 82. On the ease of doing business index[iii] also Canada scores better than India, with Canada scoring 22 and India scoring 130, where 1 indicates regulations that are most business friendly). It’s no wonder than that many High net worth investors are choosing to move to Canada and join its ever growing ranks of successful immigrants.

Canada is a melting pot of cultures with Immigrants from different countries

For anyone who wants to raise their children in an enlightened and cultured city, where they will get to meet people from different parts of the world, and assimilate a global culture, Canadian cities like Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal are the best options. Canadian cities have a large number of immigrants from different parts of the world, each of whom brings in their own unique blend to this melting pot of cultures. This makes Canada a favorite destination for Immigrants who want the best for their families.

Canadian education system is one of the best in the world

The Canadian education system from elementary to post graduation has often been hailed as one of the best in the world. Most of the students get to enjoy quality education free of cost under the public education system. Canadian School Students routinely score higher on international tests than students of many other countries and many Canadian Universities are ranked amongst the top 100 in the world.

Many other factors such as low cost of health care, better infrastructure and better job prospects also contribute to making Canada a favorite among immigrants. The Unsecure Fate of H4 Dependent Spouses in USA highlighted by widow of SrinivasKuchibhotla

An Indo-American tragedy in the USA.

An Indian man and a friend who were out for a relaxing night in Olathe in Kansas on Feb. 22. SrinivasKuchibhotla and friend were drinking at a bar when they were shot at by a person named Adam Purinton in a racially motivated attack. SrinivasKuchibhotla. While his friend survived his injuries, Kuchibhotla was killed in the attack, leaving behind his young widow SunanyaDumala.

The uncertain Immigration status of Dumala

After the devastating loss of her husband, SunanyaDumala had to face the fact that her own immigration status was now uncertain. Like many other spouses of H1B workers, her visa was connected to her husband’s visa and she was not sure if she would be allowed to return to America after attending her husband’s funeral in India in February. Hearing of her immigration plight, Congressman Kevin Yoder managed to get a one-year employment authorization for her to his office. This one-year authorization would give her sufficient time for applying for an employment visa on her own. Yoder who is from the Republican Party, generally holds strict views on immigration and is against DACA and funding to sanctuary cities, but had made an exception in the case of legal immigrants like SunanyaDumala and her husband.

SunanyaDumala’s predicament not new for Indian Immigrants

The struggles that Dumala faced with her immigration status brings to light an issue that is important for the Indian-American community. She had entered US along with her husband, who came on an H1B visa, which is used by companies in the USA to bring in highly skilled workers from abroad. As the H1B is a dual intent visa, many who arrive in the US on an H1B go on to apply for a green card. However, the waiting period for permanent immigration can be painfully long as there are strict limits on the number of employment-based green cards which can be issued to each country. As a result, applicants from countries with high population rates have longer wait times. Currently, a person from India who applies under the EB2 category can expect a wait time of 10 years on an average for his green card application to be processed. Moreover, the uncertainty of USA H1B Visa Immigrants has a large impact on their spouses, who come to the US under the H4 or dependent visa.
Many of the people who come to the US under H4 Visa are highly educated women who were pursuing successful careers in their home country but are not allowed to work in the US. This abrupt change of status has led to depression, loneliness, boredom and also possible abuse. Many women who arrive in the US on an h4 visa find it difficult to cope initially. For tips on how to cope as a dependent spouse, you can check out our earlier blog post on the subject here.

Solution to the problem of delay in Green Card Applications

As for cases like Dumala, Because of the unfair backlogs in Green Card Applications, the widow of SrinivasKuchibhotla was confronted with the prospect of having to return to India because of her H4 status. As expressed by her Congressman, it was possible for her to stay, but a more permanent fix was required. He proposed a bill, HR 392, which according to him would speed up the wait times for green card for workers who are highly skilled in their field. According to Dumala, the bill would be a huge step forward. However, she said that the government needs to address the difficulties faced by families when something happens to the principal applicant. She asked that in such cases the dependents should be given their own independent immigration status. Many other advocates to have added their voices to hers in asking for more immigration reforms. A collective voice that seems to have found a hearing in the political corridors of US as many congressmen are now coming out in favor of granting employment authorization for H4 Spouses

High Net worth Investors invest in Canada Business immigration

High net value investors continue to get attracted towards business immigration program of Canada that leads towards Canada PR.
According to a report, it has revealed that last year, investors who have been seeking to do business in Canada has been accounted for one in five increased net value investors in the country
This is despite the earlier Conservative Canadian government making changes to close the Immigrant Investor Program of Canada in the year 2014. Presently, only the passive investment path to Canada PR is the Immigrant Investor Program of Quebec (QIIP) which is extremely preferred by foreign investors.
Under this immigrant investor program of Quebec (QIIP), applicants who have lawfully gained net value of minimum $1.6 million are needed to invest around $8,00,000 for a period of five years. This program is presently accepting fresh applicants with the latest window that will close in 23rd February next year.

Eligibility Criteria for Quebec Immigrant Investor Program

Foreign investors who seek to invest in this Immigrant Investor Program of Quebec are required to acquire legal personal assets worth $1.6 million Canadian dollars. They should possess two years of experience in management and business within five years before submitting the application. They should be committed to making an investment of around $8,00,000 Canadian dollars in the Canadian business for five years. They should show interest to settle down in this Canadian province.

Canada- Most preferred destination for investor immigrants

Canada is a preferred destination for foreign investor immigrants due to its governmental stability, better quality of life and recovering economy. It is preferred destination for high net value foreign immigrants who are significant drivers of the investment immigration program.
Even though, Immigrant Investor Program of Quebec (QIIP) remains the only immigrant investment program. Many provinces in Canada manage their own entrepreneur and business streams. These streams operate under firm, limited quotas. The prospects for Canada Permanent Residence under these business immigration programs are very restricted.
As of now, two most popular options are the Self-Employed Class and Canadian Start-Up Visa Program.  Currently, it was declared that the Start-Up Visa Program will become a permanent contribution during next year. The Canadian Immigrant Investor Venture Capital Pilot Program is still functional, but the investment and requirement of net value are making it useless.

Benefits of Quebec Immigrant Investor Program

From the year 2001 till 2016, this program has given around $714 million Canadian dollars to as many as 4,737 businesses in 17 regions in the province. An average foreign investor directly invests over $7,70,000 in the economy of the country during the five-year duration of the investment.
And as per a recent report, the immigration, employment and business ownership in the country have confirmed that the foreign immigrants are much similar to Canadian citizens for establishing businesses.
It is visible that Canada has been continuously drawing many foreign immigrant investors; the Canadian government has started an investment program that offers Canada PR. The Quebec model is a perfect example of the benefits a program could generate.

Canada’s Provincial Business Immigration Program

Ottawa must also consider setting up a citizenship through its investment program, for high net value business persons and become a dominant city in the arena of citizenship through investment.
Undertaking this initiative of a new policy, Canada will attract the world’s most successful business individuals with their families and by extending their network of business.
This can prove increasingly profitable and also provide the country with bigger cash inflows which the country badly requires. If it is executed, the country would also realize the important benefits to its human capital and through the kids of certain business individuals.
Under revised Immigrant Investor Program, Ottawa is likely to account for over 70% of the market. Ontario and British Columbia will also gain from its share of transfer payments.
Together with Quebec province, the country will become a key player in the foreign residency through investment and it would matches or surpasses the popularity of US EB-5 program.
If Canada wants to return as a leader of business immigration field, they should replicate a format of QIIP and other successful overseas programs.

The DACA program has been in the news a lot lately. With speculations and assertions being made right, left and center, the fate of the Dreamers hangs in balance. After an announcement by Jeff Sessions that the White House under President Trump was rescinding DACA and a decision about the DACA bill would have to be taken by the Congress. The Democratic house speaker Nancy Pelosi stated on 13th September that President Trump assured her that he would support the DACA bill in the congress. Thus increasing hopes that a deal was finally being reached which would allow the DACA bill to be passed by Congress and allow the more than 80000 Dreamers affected by the bill to Live in USA without fear of deportation.

The Yes-No-Yes on DACA

As soon as the news of Nancy Pelosi’s statement came out, there was a host of conflicting statements being belted out by different factions. Immediately following the state House Republicans were quick to state that President Trump did not come to any agreement with Democrats on the DACA program.
To add to the confusion President Trump sent out a series of tweets which seemed to indicate that he was softening his stand on DACA.
Many people believed that an agreement was close to being reached where the GOP would support DACA in return for some form of border security. But on Thursday President Trump sent out a statement through White House Press Secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders denying all claims of a deal being made.

Legal vs Illegal Immigration to USA

The opponents of DACA assert that the program condones Illegal Immigration which is against the interests of all the people who are in the process of legally Immigrating to USA. They fear that the program could give rise to a back door entry into the United States.According to them, the Immigration laws have to be followed to the letter and no concessions should be given to the children of illegal immigrants who arrived here when they were very young. They claim that doing so would not only be unfair to the hordes of legal immigrants to USA, but would also encourage more people to immigrate illegally for the sake of giving their children a brighter future in the USA.In contrast, the advocates of the program state that the program would not encourage illegal migration as it is meant only for those who came to the US before 2007 and stayed on continuously in the USA. As such the question of newer illegal immigrants entering to take advantage of the program does not arise.According to the advocates of the program, the persons who are the beneficiaries of the program have been law abiding residents of the United States since their childhood. Many of them do not know any other country except the USA as they were brought here at a very young age
Moreover, the Dreamers have to undergo a strict vetting process to even qualify for the program to deport them now with the rescinding of the program would be against the tenets of humanity.
Also, many of the Dreamers are working in different companies, including top tech companies and to remove them would cause a labor shortage on a large scale which would cost the GDP more than 400 billion USD[i]

The problem of Illegal Immigration to USA

At the heart of the DACA debate lies the problem of illegal Migration To USA. Despite strict immigration laws and border checks, many people opt for the illegal route for Immigration To USA, Some illegal immigrants cross the border over from neighboring countries, while others arrive on a valid Visitor Visa and stay on long after their visa has expired. Opting for illegal immigration to USA may seem like an easy way to enter at first glance, given the complicated immigration laws, but it puts the immigrant at risk of arrest, deportation, and causes a black mark on his immigration profile which can affect his chances of immigration to not the just USA but also to most other countries.
Therefore it is extremely advisable to follow the legal route for Immigration to USA and rely on a good consultant to navigate the Complex Immigration laws.
